[MEDIA] NMIXX - Tiny Desk Korea

This has been out for a few weeks, but I keep coming back to it. Wanted to show it some love with a post. NMIXX had a fantastic Tiny Desk. Brilliant arrangements by the band and excellent vocal choices for the setting and different styles. And the thing I love the most is that there is basically no post-production to clean up or perfect their voices. Feels like I'm back in 2nd gen with that beautiful raw sound.

I'm not someone who gets super bent out of shape about how hyper-tuned everything in K-Pop has been for like a decade now. It's the way it is. Probably an inevitable industry-shift that can't be stopped. But god I love it when the full character of what singers are doing can be properly heard. I'd rather hear little quirks and breaks and off-notes than a machine. Dancing your ass off? Okay, machine it up. But standing at a mic? I wanna hear ya! Thankful to NMIXX and co. for doing this. They sound fabulous!

I haven't continued to watch The Unit, but there are four new music videos for the B and G groups so I'll put them all together in one post.

[MEDIA] BTS at the American Music Awards

BTS will be performing on the American Music Awards tonight. I'll probably be compelled to make a long post about it after everything is over and I've had time to process it. You can find resources and streaming links over on reddit if you'd like to watch live. I'M NOT COMPLETELY FREAKING OUT--YOU ARE!!!

LINK TO /R/BANGTAN on REDDIT

Edit: The lighting was dark, the camerawork was bad, half the performance was shots of the audience losing their minds (which was kinda fun), the fanchants were muted, and the mics sounded weak on the broadcast.

But then ARMYs come through with a bunch of fancams where you can actually see them, watch the full choreography, hear the EXTREMELY LOUD fanchants, and can really tell they had live mics (Jungkook's "Let's go! Let's go!" at the end). Not sure if this particular cam will stay up, but here's one:

I, for one, am completely thrilled.
Their [VLIVE] after the show is also all kinds of delightful.

[MV/MEDIA] THE UNI+ (music videos)

My Turn (all participants):

KBS's The UNIT is one of the newest idol survival shows. This one is dedicated to giving 'failed' idols another chance or giving newly debuted groups an opportunity to get some media attention. Three introductory MVs are out now, which I believe are from challenges in the early episodes, but I've barely started watching!

I'll put the other two in the full post. There's one for all the gentlemen competing and one for all the ladies competing.

[MEDIA] A couple notes and BTS for funzies

There's a big strike happening next week for KBS and MBC union members. It means that a number of popular TV shows are cancelled indefinitely as well as the DMC Festival which had a massive line-up of big artists/groups. Hopefully it will be resolved neatly, but there will certainly be some industry interruption in the meantime. [Korea Times article]

All members of INFINITE re-signed their contracts except for Hoya who is leaving the group. A sad day for Inspirits, I'm sure.

The lovely Alex Reid, who was a member of BP RaNia and recently left, just did an AMA over on the /r/kpop subreddit. Bit of a rare opportunity for some candid insight into what the Kpop girl group life is like. [Link to Alex's AMA]

September is looking tantalizing for comebacks. The big guns are showing up with some overlap. EXO's repackage, GFriend repackage, BTS's big comeback, TVXQ with Station singles post-military service, Lim Chang Jung, and possibly Taemin in there somewhere. Potentially big stuff as we head towards festival/awards season. I hope we can get something awesome in there. (IU as well, updated a day later!)

And for fun, we don't get this kind of thing often from western media, so I'll post it in appreciation. PEOPLE (magazine) released a 3-minute interview with BTS months ago, which is funny as is, but they just uploaded a long 20-minute version yesterday that is pretty hilarious and charming. So if you're in need of some giggles, I recommend it. These guys are gearing up for a massive promotional period through the end of the year, so brace yourselves. (Also props to Rap Monster for handling all the necessary English translation duties through their US tour and Billboard shenanigans!)

[MEDIA] The World of Dave on Youtube

I've been subscribed to Dave's channel for a while now. Lots of fun stuff. Mostly about language, and general East Asian/American cultural differences. Every once in a while Dave interviews an artist in the music industry and he does a darn good job of it.

The newest interview is with Jessi! It's super charming!

[MEDIA] Without Music Parody

Without Music (formerly House of Halo) has a fun series on their YouTube channel called #WITHOUTMUSIC.
They remove the original audio from popular videos and replace it with a new track created entirely using Foley techniques and their own vocal recording, imitating what the raw audio on set might sound like during shooting.
Pretty brilliant and hilarious.

I'll update any Kpop-related videos in this post.

BTS - IDOL NEW

BlackPink - Ddu-Du Ddu-Du NEW

  • CL - Hello Bitches

[MEDIA] 88rising - Seo Taiji is the OG Legend of Korean Music

Bringing some attention to this channel. There's some strange stuff in there. A similar style to VICE. Mostly far East Asian culture related content. They've had a handful of videos related to Kpop, but I thought this quick one on Seo Taiji was pretty cool.

A touch of Kpop history for your weekend.
