[PLAYLIST] KPOPPY's first half of 2023

Actually completing one of the yearly playlists I'm backlogged on? Shocking!

Made that decision to make 1st half playlists 30 tracks and 50 tracks for the full year last year and then the draft of the 2022 full year playlist got accidentally deleted. Many months of diligent work wiped out in moments and unrecoverable because of the way Blogger works. So now I'm making my drafts elsewhere. Lesson learned. Anyway, that 2022 one will show up in here eventually. But in the meantime just trying to keep up with the present.

First half of 2023 was a story of girl groups with friendlier sounds and Rock showing up everywhere. A lot of the major boy groups are still doing the very aggressive, shouty, noisy, stuff so the guys are way outnumbered here. And as I hoped/expected, NewJeans has had a ton of influence this year in style and sound. More of that, please!

[PLAYLIST] KPOPPY's first half of 2022

I feel like we might be just starting to shift towards a new trend. Or at least that this one is finally showing signs of slowing down. I'm more than ready to leave behind the super noisy, sing-talking/chanting, Frankensteiny stuff. Pleeeaaaase.

Pop-rock has been on the rise. Probably some Olivia Rodrigo influence there. I'm enjoying it!

As I've been trying to catch up with all these yearly playlists I'm behind on, I decided to simplify them in a couple ways. 1st half of the year will be 30 tracks and full year will be 50 tracks. I'll also just be including the list and a few honorable mentions instead of writing a bunch about selected tracks and extra things. That'll motivate me to get all caught up.

Out of the top 30 my utmost faves are Taeyeon's 'INVU' and B.I/DeVita's 'BTBT'.

Honorable Mentions

English:

There were some nice English tracks out. Eric Nam's is so beautiful. Even appreciated aespa's, as cheesy as it is, just a solid track with a good message (There is also a Korean version now).

Top Tearjerkers:

The animation for PSY's Happier is killer. Beautifully done. And also... Capitalism grinding people to a pulp. Then JaeSu releasing a duet. Not a particularly interesting Japanese OST track, but oh god, just seeing them singing together again turned me into a puddle.

That's it! Keeping it short!

[PLAYLIST] KPOPPY's first half of 2020

This year... what the hell is this year?!

Gonna try to focus only on music for this post, but I (and the rest of the world) have been on such a rollercoaster that I feel like this playlist is going to be cobbled together from superficial enjoyment ... more than usual anyway. It has been hard to pay attention and listen to full albums and curate more thoughtfully since the start of the year. And, of course, the industry has also been disrupted, so it's a whole mess. Phew.

The 'noise war' trend has carried over from last year. Bombastic brassy EDM fanfare still dominates the idol scene. Strong vocal effects and autotune are still in fashion to my despair (heeelp!!!). Outside of that, lots of strong R&B stuff, which I've appreciated.

[PLAYLIST] KPOPPY's first half of 2019

Better late than never. 2019 makes me tired just thinking about it.
Much of my experience for the first half of this year was through the lens of mod responsibilities on /r/kpop dealing with one massive scandal after another. So tired.

What trends do we have going this year? Well, autotune is back. I had noticed it becoming prominent again more in the indie hip hop realm last year. It just grew and grew from there until now most mainstream Idol stuff has strong elements of it. My hate for noticeable autotune can't be overstated. I'm left desperately hoping this doesn't continue for long. Latin rhythms are still present (my playlist is still going), but it seems I was right to question if they would last. There has been a throwback fusion to the tropical house of the last couple years mixed in with the Latin pop sound this summer, but we're getting less straightforward Latin pop already. I'll generally say that Hip Hop is just fully a standard part of almost everything. That's not an especially new thing, but it has reached this point of being absolutely pervasive. I'm fine with that, just ditch the autotune, please!!!

I'm pretty well convinced BlackPink was the catalyst for most girl groups to be doing some form of Girl Crush as a concept. Almost all debuts have been in that vein this year. Boy groups still seem to be doing their general range of synth-y Hip Hop in streetwear. Strappy bondage stuff is still in play a little. Mullets are still in. Autotune and mullets, man. Send help.

Oddly enough, the trend that kept hitting me in the face was the presence of a certain color. This chartreuse, fluorescent, acidic yellow-green has been everywhere for some reason. I even checked to see what the Pantone color of the year was, but that's a coral pink. This neon highlighter green is the vivid opposite of that.

Every shot in this little collage is taken from a different MV, except for KEY who has two from his, including that last totally green square. And these were just the ones I thought of grabbing. There were tons more. I can't recall ever seeing such an obvious color trend like this before.

BTS is still driving K-Pop's global energy. From my perspective, the dialogue through news and social media outside the scene assumed this was just a flash-in-the-pan trend that would die quickly. Lately, I've picked up on some surprise and confusion that it seems to be growing in presence instead of fading as they thought it would. BTS's global success was built on a worldwide grassroots movement of hyper-engagement... I'm not sure what it will take for them to understand that's why they'll continue to burn hot and bright as long as they're active. And BTS content is always active, even when they take breaks. I can't imagine military service is going to change that much, especially if they go in staggered groups. Anyway, BTS still killin' it.

Music! Let's go! I think my personal taste might show more in this playlist than ever before. If you've followed Kpoppy at all, you'll know I like R&B, Rock, pretty melodies, epic ballads, and strong vocals in a lower range.

[PLAYLIST] KPOPPY's Best Of 2018 : The Eclectic Mix

Why was this so excruciating to narrow down to 30? Why did I like so much music this year? Maybe instead of becoming more cynical as I get older, I get more easy to please. Regardless, this mix of 30 eclectic choices in Korean music for 2018 is heavily expanded in the full post with some extra categories full of songs that could easily qualify for my top favorites. I'll have honorable mentions and some indie stuff and some hip hop stuff and album recommendations and really it's all too much, but I'm compelled to include everything. It's my blog and I'll do what I want!

Fashion-wise, the strappy/bondage-esque styling continued along with over-sized pieces and wide-leg pants coming back for the gentlemen. The mullet contagion is still spreading and I'm not happy about it.

MVs often get filmed at the same sets. In recent years, music videos had trends of being shot in abandoned pools/bathhouses and then wind farms. Over the last year, the most popular place continues to be this building...

LOONA, Stray Kids, SOYA, Jerastar (seen here) and at least a dozen more artists have all been seen at this distinctive building with the circular architecture.

The Latin rhythm playlist I started early in the year continues to grow though I have a feeling this musical trend will not have the same staying power as Tropical House. I feel like it may have already peaked? I'm sure there will be more songs following the style, but I'm getting the sense something else will take over instead. We still have a lot of 80s pop and 90s hip hop sounds going strong.

The usual rules! Only songs with music videos. No OSTs. No repeating artists. It's all my subjective and personal taste. My goal with the final playlist is that no matter what song comes on I have the same feeling of, "OH, I LOVE THIS SONG!" for every one of them. So, we have the playlist, some notes on it, and then anything goes at the end of the full post for honorable mentions (chalk full of good stuff this year!).

[PLAYLIST] KPOPPY's first half of 2018

Halfway! We've arrived.
2018 isn't playing around. I've really enjoyed the year's music so far. Around this time last year I was collapsing under the weight of Kpop going super far into weird experimental Frankenstein territory. Thankfully, that chilled out by the end of the year. These six months since have felt pretty great. A nice balance between weird and good. Everything still feels very listenable. There's a strong showing for mainstream stuff this year. I usually feel like my odd indie picks dominate. Not this time!

Tropical House gave way to Future Bass, but both are still present. As I figured it would, the Despacito trend hit Kpop with the influence of Latin rhythms. Maybe not as intensely as I would have predicted. I've been adding to a playlist for the trend. There is some overlap with Trop House and Moombahton in there, but I think the shift is fairly distinct from the last couple years. My Latin rhythm playlist is available now and I'll continue adding to it into the future. Feel free to comment or @ me if you have recommendations to add (@AlleyBetwixt).

Fashion trends? Not much out of the ordinary. I noticed a lot of strappy buckles and bondage harnesses, but that was for weekly music show performances: Dreamcatcher, Wanna One, BTS, etc. It showed up less often in MVs. Interesting one.

BTS finding so much success and momentum in the West is definitely bringing way more attention to Kpop from major players. Billboard and Grammy have had quite regular features for a while now. It's amazing to see how far and fast this has come. Also slightly terrifying.
Let's get to the music!

[PLAYLIST] KPOPPY's Best Of 2017 : The Eclectic Mix

I'm looking back at 2017 with a heavy sigh. I think my playlist might reflect some of my mood. Fair warning. It was a tough year personally and I found myself more and more gravitating towards emotionally resonant or calming material.

Characteristics of Kpop for the year? I believe we're finally nearing the end of the Tropical House bonanza. The relentless 'Frankenstein' tracks, which were packed full of too many disparate ideas in the first half of the year, have mellowed out. Kpop has felt more coherent from track to track in the last few months. Still lots of trap percussion. Too much, probably. Moving more towards Future Bass as the tropical stuff fades. Things felt like they got kinda nuts in 2017, so I'm pondering if we'll move towards even more traditional structures and sounds (Despacito clones, for example) or we'll move in an entirely different direction.

I don't typically mention fashion, but there were distinct trends. The ladies traded in their high-waisted shorts for cheerleader skirts and skater dresses. That started in 2016, but it was pushed super hard this year. Flats and kitten heels are still pretty standard, which I continue to love. Stay out of the high heels as long as you can, girls! The gentlemen really fascinated me. There was almost a uniform that developed. Huge over-sized button-up dress shirts, half-tucked into slightly too-short pants, chokers, and dangly earrings. No complaints from me. Men with long, elaborate earrings is apparently something I'm into. Ahem. The more you know...
Mullets can disappear forever though. Please. PLEASE.

Kpop got very cosmic. Lots of big space themes. Star fields, celestial bodies, nebulae. Eclipse imagery was pervasive. Suns and moons. This really intrigued me considering the major eclipse story of the year was across the continental United States. Nothing in Korea. Kpop is absolutely serving a global marketplace, if there was still any doubt.

The rules, as always. Only songs with music videos. No OSTs. All Korean language. No repeating artists (tweaked this one a bit for one case -- sue me).
Okay, music! Let's go!

[PLAYLIST] KPOPPY's first half of 2017

We're already halfway through 2017 and I'm wondering where the heck the year went. Does the year go faster for me when the music is less exciting? I wonder...

Oh, 2017. You've been an odd one. It's a case of 'be careful what you wish for'. Kpop was trending towards more experimental over the last couple years. By 'experimental' I don't mean groundbreaking. It's still pretty firmly in the realm of manufactured pop. But there is a strong showing of songs having non-traditional structures, samples, and effects. The effort to make a straight pop, endlessly catchy, earworm appears to be old hat this year. As a result, many tracks were Frankenstein-esque amalgamations of trap, hip hop, tropical house, and... noise. Loud and compressed noise. Most of the top boy bands are completely swallowed up by rap (which almost always sounds forced to me). Not my jam.

Notably, the songs I've liked the most so far fall into a few categories. (1) Solo women, R&B flavored, with lower vocal range. (2) Boy bands with genuinely catchy hooks/choruses and less 'rippety-rap'. (3) Indie rock.

My Tropical House playlist continues to grow. I'm lucky to actually like the tropical stuff. It's easy to listen to. I say lucky, because if you don't like tropical, Kpop is probably killing you this year. It's everywhere. It's unavoidable. And everything is starting to sound the same. It actually doesn't have a huge presence on my playlist, but it's in there. My sympathies if you're one of those people who hates it. I'll say a little Kpop prayer for you. I still have no idea what trend will be next. I think we're a long way off from tropical being fully run into the ground.

Generally, my playlist is a story of choruses. Catchy choruses are key. That's a bit of a subjective thing, but in a year where choruses have been weird, trap-heavy, monotone things, it's the catchy choruses that form the core of what I'm listening to.

[PLAYLIST] KPOPPY's Best Of 2016 : The Eclectic Mix

Tons of huge names, that I typically like very much, released songs that didn't quite hit the mark for me. Boy bands especially failed to really excite me even though many of them had great comebacks. Just not my thing in many cases. Ballads had a good showing this year! They typically don't make a splash in end-of-the-year playlists from Kpop fans. But they'll find a place in mine!

Trends. I don't listen to much American music these days, but I did listen to Justin Bieber's album in 2015 when there was enormous hype around it. I immediately began the countdown to when that particular EDM, tropical house, vaguely dance hall kind of sound would show up in Kpop. Major Lazer. Same thing. A bit hard to describe that sound, but when you hear it you know it. Sure enough, roughly mid-year, the 80s throwback trend of last year had blended into more of a house sound. I added to a playlist along the way that hopefully conveys this trend developing. It won't be strictly 2016 and I'll continue to add to it beyond this year.

KPOP meets house, tropical house, reggae, etc, playlist!

Indirectly related to the music, I noticed another trend. Medical in nature. More than ever there were celebrities being open about their psychological health and issues related to exhaustion and anxiety. Panic and eating disorders, fainting and extreme fatigue, gastric conditions and a variety of mental illnesses., Now it's likely that competition in the industry these days has become more difficult to manage. but it's also something that has probably always existed. The difference being that struggling artists and their companies are being more open, honest, and supportive instead of hiding these things to protect their image and the illusion of perfection. I see this as progress which will hopefully improve working conditions and mitigate some long-term harm into the future. One can hope! (But there will be no breath-holding from me)

Anywayyyy, we're here for music, right?! Let's get to it. My top 30, as always, only includes promoted songs with MVs, good synergy between the audio and visual components, aligns with my personal taste not with popularity or charts... and no OSTs!

[PLAYLIST] KPOPPY's first half of 2016

The most obvious trend this year is simply escalating the amount of girl groups promoting with the cute/aegyo/schoolgirl concept from last year. While it's an interesting trend, only GFRIEND/BerryGood are in here. Last year it looked like companies were heading towards being more experimental and 'International' with their sound. In my opinion, that rings true so far. Projects like SM's Station seem to be doing fairly well. Navercast and V app live streams have become quickly significant. Lots of industry activity online should be interesting to watch expand.

[PLAYLIST] KPOPPY's Best Of 2015 : The Eclectic Mix

A re-cap of my general guidelines.
  • Only songs with MVs
  • Synergy: The video and song amplify each other
  • Innovation or anything that feels fresh
  • We embrace weird here
  • No OSTs
  • And when push comes to shove... personal taste trumps...
2015 was a hell of a year. Last year, I tended to favor material off the beaten path. This year, the mainstream seemed to have a weird little fire under its butt. Lots of bold moves, different sound, and bucking trends that have been the norm for years. This made for many difficult playlist-crafting sessions along the way. And even now there are at least twenty songs that I could easily switch out, so we'll include some honorable mentions at the end.

I'll quickly mention a few trends I noticed. Black and white. So much greyscale in MVs this year. Not just frequency, but mostly paired with songs I loved. I started a playlist early in the year and kept it going.
HERE'S THE BLACK/WHITE/GRAYSCALE PLAYLIST.

Another trend brought me great joy. Girl groups in flats! For a long time female idols have been wearing high-heels as the standard. This led to choreography being mostly the stereotypically hyper-feminized style of burlesque/go-go/cabaret/vogue dance... as they were styles born out of wearing such shoes. It's a fundamentally different kind of limited movement and posture. Sometimes watching dudes dance in heels illustrates this best. It's not the gender, it's the shoes, and the cultural associations we connect with them.

But there has been a slew of ladies wearing sneakers, flats, or going barefoot. Lots of the new girl groups have had much freer, more energetic, and aerobic choreography because of this, which is awesome. myB, Lovelyz, Gfriend, Red Velvet, Oh My Girl, CLC, April, and Gain among others, all kept their heels on the ground and gave high-energy performances as a result.
Huge thumbs-up from me.

FINALLY TO THE PLAYLIST.
My top 30 eclectic mix. The order is purely chronological.

[PLAYLIST] KPOPPY's first half of 2015

Figured I'd make a playlist of the MVs that caught my eye for the first half of the year. Many of which will be contenders for my end of the year 'eclectic mix'. It was very slow-going for the first few months and the most interesting stuff, for me, has been of the non-idol variety. Still waiting for a mainstream group to do something that completely knocks my socks off. We'll see!

[PLAYLIST] KPOPPY's Best Of 2014 : The Eclectic Mix

2015 has arrived! Happy New Year!

There are a zillion top Kpop lists out there. Every fan will have their own unique favorites. My list is not strictly mainstream Idol pop. I like to see an odd spectrum of different styles. The main thread that runs through my top 30 is that each entry has synergy between the video and song. The song offers something pleasing to the ear, is often catchy, and makes me excited when it shuffles onto a playlist. And ALSO that the video amplifies the experience of the song visually, ideally offering something inventive or at least a comprehensive vision in terms of aesthetics.

Link to the full playlist on Youtube

The order is purely in chronological publishing order. But I'll be pulling out some highlights for this post. Onward!

1. Puer Kim - Manyo Maash

Manyo Maash was the perfect start to my year. Fantastic debut, unique sound, dark video. Love everything about it. Her second single 'Bank' is also a rad song and video. I want more Puer!

2. SPICA - You Don't Love Me
3. 40 - Counting Stars
4. Neon Bunny - It's You
5. Orange Caramel - Catallena

6. Lee Seung Hwan - What Happens Only To Me

A video that I haven't seen on any other list. Interesting vocals, the chilling build to a much larger choral sound, and the video is exquisite theater with a beautiful color palette.

7. Park Hyo Shin - Wild Flower
8. Eric Nam - Ooh Ooh

9. Jay Park - Metronome

Unconscious/restrained/struggling women showed up in a lot of 2014 videos for some reason. It's forgiven here (kind of) for being in an overall great video. Love the repetition of metronomes, pendulums, and swinging objects. And the song has been stuck in my head since April.

10. Akdong Musician - Melted
11. 15& - Sugar
12. Kim Yeon Woo - Move
13. AOA - Short Hair

14. f(x) - Red Light

f(x)'s comeback was one of the very few girl groups not falling into the 'overtly sexy' or 'sugary cute' categories. In a year of seeing the same styling over and over again, Red Light was a breath of fresh air.

15. Block B - HER
16. Ra.D - As Always
17. HyunA - RED
18. Taemin - Danger

19. Orange Caramel - My Copycat

Catallena is probably the stronger song and was also a major highlight of the year. But My Copycat brilliantly tapped into all our nostalgia in a delightfully colorful way. I'm hoping Orange Caramel continues down this road.

20. EXID - UP&DOWN
21. John Park - U
22. IU - Sogyeokdong

23. Kiha & the Faces - Mine

Got a great song and no budget? Just dance like a spaz in a warehouse with a few costume changes. This is my favorite music video of the year. No joke. This is forever my jam.

24. VIXX - Error
25. Epik High -Born Hater

26. Purfles - 1,2,3

One of the strongest debuts in all of Kpop. I love the transition in and out of the bridge. Some tight production and good vocals on display.

27. MATE - BABY
28. Hyolyn x JooYoung - Erase

29. MAMAMOO - Pianoman

MAMAMOO completely owned everyone right out of the gate. I would prefer to put Mr. Ambiguous in this list for the song and video, except for the long minutes spent pranking these ladies to the point of tears... ruining an otherwise perfect MV for me. :(
Luckily Pianoman featured these brilliant women, right at the end of the year, with appropriate focus.

30. Guckkasten - Transformation

My favorite 'classic' Idol group videos are Block B's HER and AOA's SHort Hair.
My album of the year is JYJ's Just Us.
